Samarkand – is one of the most ancient and world-famous cities.
By its age, Samarkand can be compared to such ancient cities as Rome, Athens, and Babylon. In 2007 Samarkand will celebrate its 2750 year anniversary.
Samarkand can doubtlessly be called as the “Pearl of the East”. Standing on the crossroad of the Great Silk Road, it took and preserved until present times the culture, art and unique architecture of the ancient world civilizations.
Historical monuments of Samarkand impress contemporaries by their beauty and greatness.
On one of these unique monuments of architecture – Registan square – every biennium between 25th and 31st of August International Music Festival “Sharq Taronalari” (“Melodies of Orient”) is held on.
International Music Festival “Sharq Taronalari” (“Melodies of Orient”) is one of the biggest festivals in Central Asia. The main aims and objectives of the festival are to popularize widely the best achievements of national music art, to preserve and develop great traditions of people, to encourage talents in musical and vocal sphere, as well as to spread in further international creative ties, to strengthen cultural-spiritual cooperation, to praise peace, friendship and ideas of mutual sympathetic. |

Melodies of Orient |
The first International Music Festival “Sharq Taronalari” (“Melodies of Orient”) took place in 1997 at which participated musical groups and performers from 31 different countries. Today it became one of the most popular and famous festivals not only in Central Asia but also abroad. The bright evidence to this is that year after year not only the number and the artistic level of participants are increasing, but also geographical range of participating countries is widened.
Thus, at the 5th International Music Festival “Sharq Taronalari” that was held on in 2005, participants from 51 countries attended the event.
It became a good tradition to undertake international scientific conferences, devoted to particular aspects of music, at which participate scientists and scholars from all over the world.
Each Festival, that was held on in Samarkand is unique and exclusive. Peculiarity of the 6th Festival, which will take place within the last week of August in 2007, will be that it coincides with celebration of 2750 year anniversary of Samarkand at international level and all participants of the Festival “Sharq Taronalari” will be witnesses of festivities devoted to this special event. |

Samarkand is the Homeland of world-known scientists and thinkers, poets and musicians, artists and statesman. From time immemorial the artistic traditions of musical arts and culture in Samarkand were kept and developed for new generation.
The history of Samarkand counts nearly 2750 years and architectural monuments which belong to Dynasty of Timurids has the some importance as architectural masterpieces of ancient Egypt, China, India, Greece and Rome.
In 2001 "Samarkand -on crossroads of world culture" (25-session - Finland) was included in the list of World Cultural Heritage.
The musical life of the city was enriched by Makom art (the system of 12 makoms "Shashmakom"), as well as by various folklore songs and instrumental melodies like dastan, Kursak, ashula, performed by folk national, musicians, singers, hafizes and bahshi-shoirs. Such famous bastakors and scientists-theorists like Abdulkadir Maragi, Abdurakhman Djami as well as musician, singer and bastakor Hodja Abdulaziz Abdurasulov, the narrators of folk tales Ergash Djumanbulbul-ogli, Fazil Yuldash-ogli, Pulkan shoir, Islom shoir has enhanced the prestige of Samarkand which has become at present time the center of world festivals, symposiums, competitions, etc. The International Musicological symposium, dedicated to the problems of folklore, people's and professional art as well as the Festival of traditional music is one of them.

The place for musical Festival |
The Musical Festival "Sharq Taronalari" such a grandiose festive occasion held at Registan Square in Samarkand on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, has become an important cultural event in the field of international cooperation which has given not only the impulse to the creative contacts between the performers, musical and cultural workers of different countries but it has also stimulated the integration into the musical process taking place parallel on various cultural continents.
"The place for musical Festival "Sharq Taronalari" in Uzbekistan, specifically in Samarkand, has been chosen on purpose - as was said in speech of welcome by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov - because Samarkand by right is considered to be one of the Cradles of the World Civilization. Samarkand was the residence place, the center of ruling and creative activity of hundreds outstanding personalities such as Amir Temur, Imam Al-Bukhariy, Mirzo Ulugbek, Hodja Ahror Valiy, Kazizada Rumiy, Sharafiddin Ali Yazdi, Davlatshah Samarkandiy, Clavicho, Nizamiy Gandjaviy, Alisher Navoiy, Abdurakhman Djamiy, Abdurazzakh Samarkandi and others. From time immemorial Samarkand was the center of meetings, reception of representative from different countries with different cultures". |
